a movie review that's really about something else....

some advice: skip the small font portion and go right to the big font ending.

since my blog has pretty much died (thanks again, facebook bastards) i figured i'd write a movie review that no one will really care about.

i supposed i could go back to college, major in some sort of liberal arts degree, and write papers on film & literature that no one will really care about. but that takes time and money. and smarts! so instead of gettin' some fancy book learnin' degree, i'm gonna blog about stuff for free, on my lunch break, like any lazy girl should.

we watched "summer of sam" last night. it's spike lee's 1999 film about the summer of 1977 in the bronx, when folks where terrified by the "son of sam" killings. as a very morbid child, i remember following the story on the news, about the guy in NY killing people because a dog told him to. click here to read my blog post about being a creepy, morbid kid.

i've liked spike lee films in the past. i saw "she's gotta have it" in high school, and being a pseudo-hipster, liberal gal, had to be down with that film. and public enemy, of course. (looking back 20 some years, i think the film and public enemy stand up fairly well...) "crooklyn" is one of my favorite films, and "girl 6" was likeable.

"summer of sam" is BLAH BLAH BLAH..........

ok, i don't even have the time nor the energy to finish this stupid review. i'm gonna make the font small, in case some lunatic cares to read the whole mess.

here's the thing about the movie i've been trying to get at: the really graphic sex scenes bothered me. they made me uncomfortable. and i realized, this is always the case. watching simulated sex scenes in movies is always unpleasant for me. always.

i'm not a prude, really! i'm not going to give TMI (especially since my mom reads my blog) but let's just say i am not a prude. i am fine with nudity, and implied sex of all sorts in film (lord knows it takes a lot to offend me) but seeing actors pretend to have sex in any kind of detail horrifies me. i guess i'm ok if it's real sex being shown on screen. but call a spade a spade, and a porn a porn!

watching this movie, and feeling so nervous during the graphic sex scenes (while sitting next to my husband) was a revelation. i realized that i can feel this way and still be a feminist. i can still be a 2nd or 3rd wave, sex-positive feminist!!!! i can still be cool with sex & nudity, anti-censorship, while also being totally weirded out by on screen sex scenes.
