@David: You don't have to use your camera's panoramic mode. I never use it (see, for example, my panoramas). A combination of automatic mode (to determine ideal apperture and shutter speed) and manual (to take all images) is enough.
PS. I made a small tutorial on how to do panoramas using autostitch.

Look at Dan... he's a one man band! I've never been able to figure out the panorama settings in my camera. You've inspired me to go home and learn.

yeah, my camera doesn't have panoramic mode. i should rename these to "stitch" pics or something.
