for the first time ever, a joint post. the blog has brought me and my little sister together! after all the years of fighting, the bruises and tears, we have come together to create the ultimate:

sad bastard mix CD

we share a love of all things sad bastard. depressing movies, music, anything that makes ya cry. so help us come up with a list for the ultimate depressing mix CD!
here's what we have so far:
  • anything by elliot smith ("miss misery" is still my fav)
  • anything from the "bawlers" disk from the new tom waits box set
  • anything from the beck CD "sea changes" (he got depressed after breaking up with some model and made one of the saddest CDs ever!)
  • sufjan stevens song about john wayne gacy (made me cry at work!)
  • jeff buckey "last goodbye"
  • leonard cohen
  • will oldham (new partner)

  2. Okay, from Sea Change you have to have "Lost Cause."

Nick Cave's the Boatman's Call is an entire slab of Sad Bastard perfection about Heroin and Polly Jean Harvey.

I'm partial to "Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere." Which has this verse-

I remember a girl so bold and so bright/ Loose limbed and laughing and brazen and bare/ Sits gnawing her knuckes in the chemical light/ O where do we go now but nowhere?/ You come for me now with a cake that you've made/ Ravaged avenger with a clip in your hair/ Full of glass and bleach and my old razor blades/ O where do we go now but nowhere?

  4. I could write pages on this topic, but one of my all time favorites is Lonesome Suzie from The Band. Written and sung by the late Richard Manual.

This is from an article written in 1986, the night when author, Peter Stone Brown found out that Richard Manuel had died. It originally appeared in Peter Stone Brown's regular column, The Other Side in a paper called the Welcomat in Philadelphia, in the March 12, 1986 issue.

In the early days of The Band, he wrote some of their best songs -- "In A Station," "Katie's Been Gone," "Lonesome Suzie" -- that are still great today. If Robbie Robertson was the group's chronicler of historic American myth, Manuel was the poetic dreamer, forever lost, wandering some haunted mountain, hearing voices calling. When he sang, you heard the voices calling too.

Okay...I'm a little drunk, but here goes. Probably anything from "You Are Free"- Cat Power. "Why Do They Leave" and "Dear Chicago"- Ryan Adams. Most of "Extraordinary Machine"- Fiona Apple. Damn, that's a fantastic record.Yeah, I'm just too drunk now. Lost my memory. Ah...sweet booze.

Allright, i thought of a few more."Lua"- Bright Eyes, "I Want Everything"- Luna, "Please Tell My Brother"- Golden Smog, though it's really just Jeff Tweedy. And lastly, "Tomorrow Night"- Patty Griffin. This is tricky, seeing how I'm drunk and all. Hope this is a help...um, Glitter Girl. Why haven't i made an appearance in your blog? Are you scared?

  7. dan, those lyrics are so f'in depressing! you need to play that song for me (if i am ever home and not stuck at work!)

mark the shark- yes, the "you are free" album is one of ny favorite sad bastard recording. when we saw her play at bonnaroo, she was all upbeat and happy and doing songs from "the greatest". dan wanted to know why she wasn't drunk and sad. i think that's when we decide to leave bonnaroo!

"lua" is one of my all time favorites, and a song groundcat and i actually sing together. well, he sings and i...butcher it. hehehehe...

ah marky, it's nice to see you posting drunk on the blog. i've blogged drunk many a time.... sweet, sweet booze.....

i am working on a blog all about my long lost friend mark. soon....

stacy- i knew you'd have the perfect nick cave song in mind!

and mom, i figured you'd include that george jones song. i remember sitting in the pinto around 1979 hearing that song on the radio and you crying. now it makes me cry to hear it!

Finally, at long last... An appearance in Glitter Girl's blog! My crowning achievement! I'll send a photo one of these days. There's another song for you... "These Days"- Paul Westerberg covering Jackson Browne. Also, "Call me On Your Way Back Home"- yet another Ryan Adams song. Maybe the saddest bastard of them all... My best to Lisa Ann. Think she remembers me?

oh, and there would have to be a smiths song, i would say 'please please please let me get what i want'...
